“The Power of a Seed” is a Teacher Innovative Grant awarded to Ms. Deschler at Westbrook Intermediate. This program integrates multi mini courses, environmental education and biology for students Pre-K through 12th grade impacting not only Westbrook Intermediate but also Weber Elementary and Clear Brook High School. The seeds are grown in the two indoor greenhouses at Westbrook Intermediate and once the plants are large enough they are moved to Clear Brook High School and Weber Elementary for their gardens. Westbrook students continue to work with AA (special needs) students at Weber Elementary and Clear Brook High School all while learning about food systems, soil and much more!
“For me, this grant is about a sense of community,” Ms. Deschler stated. “Watching our kids interact with each other, with nature in the forefront, is extremely heartwarming. We are bringing positivity to both environmental and humanitarian aspect and these kids love that they inspire and bring positive influences to the special needs community.”
